Dealing with Willful Ignorance
I know that this is not a healthy approach to stress, however, the inability to effectively disseminate proper training and education on new systems becomes arduous at best. I have example after example, however, it wouldn't have any basis on this article. I can explain what is needed to present a successful project request, however, it will mean tedious data crunching, so that you can provide the educated decision your executive committee needs.
First Step: Gather the needs of each of your departments. Identify their system needs, storage needs, how often they need to access these files, backup/archive strategy, and/or storage requirements.
Second: Identify storages amounts and security requirements. Look at those departments that seem to hoard all of their files forever. Think about the different solutions out there to fill in specific needs of your implementation. For example, if you have the money, look for a deduplication foundation to help reduce the expansive storage overhead that you may have. Deduplication solutions allow for steamlined data storage by linking multiple copies to a single version. As an example, department a sends an attachment to 50 individuals, and those 50 forwards it on to 10 people each. Now, you're looking at 500 copies of the same document. At 3mb each, you're looking at a single email causing a net loss of storage to the tune of 1500mb or 1.5 gb of storage. Use the De-dup solution, and instead of 1.5gb, you would only have 3mb with links to the file.
Third and Last:
Administration and maintenance is key. Disk space is growing exponetially, and the ability to maintain your disk's efficiency is key. It is not unheard of anymore to have a system capable of saving 1-2TB of data, and if you do not maintain the disk, either through defrag and/or scan disk, your disk performance would drop almost %50 .
I will check back periodically to show and explain that steps that I have taken with regards to my immediate project.
Thanks!

As a Father, I'm So Blessed
Looking back as a father and addressing all of the faults that have transpired, you can't help but to wonder what you could have done better. As there is no right or wrong way to be a parent, and no matter who expresses themselves as an expert, it is still a crap shoot on what your results will be. Often times, I reflect on my decisions a little too often, and it is a constant chore to keep myself from second guessing all of my decisions. Should I punish because of this, should I let them do that, and am I making the right decision that will help him grow personally?
Through all of this, he still called me to let me know how he is doing and to let me know that he loves me. That by itself lets me know that I'm not doing too bad.
Thank you Buddy!!!

Is Linux a Good Alternative to PC users
From an administrator point of view, you couldn't ask for a stable and secure platform to run server based applications, however, a desktop needs to be a little more user friendly. I am a little partial to the Debian backend with Ubuntu and Kubuntu, and the interfaces are quite user friendly, however, installing software and devices are pretty difficult, especially if you don't know what you are doing. Understanding the drive structure, where to install applications and where to save and access your files.
Like I said, the desktops are becoming more and more user friendly, however, with the advent of windows new release and Mac's leopard, I do not see the retail sector exploding in popularity until all of these concerns are met.

Political Conventions
I am the typical independent, you know the type of voter that weighs all of the issues and votes their conscience and not the conscience of a given party. After all, the definite view of the parties are self serviant and not for the public majority. We all have successes and failures in our life, and we all seem to have our own views of what tends to be overwhelming and destructive. We do not need the assistance of others to help us wallow in our misery, we need to have a leader that can unite us with the idea's and ideals needed to lift us out of the depression that everybody has fallen into. We don't need to argue about experience, since the president needs the assistance of the legislative branch and visa versa to get any true change done. A good example would be Presiden Jimmy Carter. He had some really good ideas while in office, however, due to the full GOP House and Senate, his entire presidency became a Lame Duck presidency and went down in history as a failed term.
With out the ability to bring all individuals together, without the concerns of specific parties, nothing will get passed, and the typical view of our government's status quo will continue forward. Pointing fingers and finding fault in all that one has done or will do will only cause the delay of what really needs to happen, CHANGE.
Let's take a chance, drop the senseless following and promptings from supposed leaders of each party and lets listen to what the candidates have to say and how they propose to follow through with their plans. Maybe we can take a chance and follow the proper candidate for what they propose rather than blindly following a mostly two party system only interested in maintaining their power. Views and opinions are what makes our form of government exciting, so let's listen, DEBATE and DISCUSS, and then vote our conscience. We may flip the Electoral College on it's rear and may make the most of the opportunities presented to us.

The Difference Between Mac and PC
Now I may be a part of a narrow group that likes Vista. I remember all of the hullabaloo when Windows 95 came out, and Mac users complaining that Windows 95 was a poor knockoff of their beloved OS. I currently support three server technologies, Windows, Mac, and Linux, and the one that I have the most problems in the enterprise is my Mac server and clients. Windows and Linux have their own little quirks, and even the OS developers do not claim to make their operating system interoperability to be flawless. Mac on the other hand has made claims that their OS will work with multiple operating systems flawlessly, and since it's built on a Linux platform, cross compatibility is simple.
Ok, I can buy that with basic items. You can mount and launch OS independent applications, however, when you need to use resources from a MAC, good luck. Sure, don't get me wrong, all of the necessary items can be done, however, they're not for the layman becuase they require consistent tweaking and monitoring to ensure enterprise level benchmarks.
Now, on the Vista front, you need to take a momey and decide what you want to used Windows for. If you're interested in running nothing but new applications and hardware, then Vista is your best XP SP2 or SP3. Not only is xp forward and backward compatible, it's compatibility mode is more robust than Vista is, and theres already support sites with researched answers to fix your issues. Vista is slowly coming to its own, and by the time xp is fully phased out later this year, Vista should have released sp2 with the necessary fixes to run all of the latest XP applications, which will add the necessary compatibility modules to run other legacy business applications, such as Great Plains and the like.
Take your time and give Vista another chance, and if you're lucky, buy that mac and use them for what they were intended for: Microsoft Business and Gaming, Macintosh for Graphics and Other media applications.

IT Support
I know that I shouldn't be so critical on the employee's as they end up paying for my salary, however, if they would just listen to the basic premise of simple troubleshooting, I would have the opportunity to focus on projects to help streamline our processes, which in the long run would decrease IT expenditures by running more effiiently with what we have. I have been compiling a knowledge base for our employee's, which has taken a very long time, however, when I'm done, I have NO faith that they will use it.
As a final thought, I believe that they are all lazy and don't care. This frame of mind will and probably has crippled businesses in the past, where if employee's try to work on their efficiency, all would work towards the interest of the company and employee. Let me know what you think about your work mates, and don't hold back.

Starting an Online Presence
My business plan, proforma, marketing plan, research, etc hasn't been enough to crack through the current credit crunch. With the looming threat of a recession, I have had to put my business endeavors to rest. I am always looking for other ways to look for funding, so if you know of anything, please let me know.
If I'm not showing enough drive during this fiscally responsive economy at this point, please give me some feed back and such.
Thanks.

Starting an Online Presence Part II of Proforma
Balancing your resonsibilites with enjoyment will translate efficiently into higher productivity from your exployee's. I've been around so many environments that do not approach their day to day responsibilities with zeal or in some cases understanding. I used to be guilty of the same problems I have high lighted above. I finally changed my approach to daily management with one of respect and honor. I learned that without the support of your workforce, you won't stand a chance to succeed. You will see morale increase, productivity increase, and the overall well being of your company increase as well.
Ok Back to my delima. I can use some insight as well, so please email me with information. As it sits right now, I'm developed my business strategy and am working on other income generation techniques to fund my dream.. Who knows, it may work..
Remember, Risks are mere Opportunities in disguise. A mantra that everybody needs to follow.

Should CBS's Katie Couric share her anchor chair?
For the longest time, the disdain they held for each other was not kept private. Onset tirades blended to the street and off camera. Not to say that Katie wouldn't have a chance to share, with her experience with the Today's show, however, when you reach the pinnacle of your career just to have someone say you now have to share it, would be a blow to any personality.
Like the past, if they try to occupy the other chair, the only thing that will suffer, will be the news that is delivered. It will become tainted with ill will and disorderly competition that would be very detrimental to Katie as well as the co-chair.
If CBS feels that the show would benefit, they need to start a marketing campaign with two individuals that they personally would groom to take the role. To expect anything else from on-air personalities would degrade any progress their careers afforded them.
Why some children are so angry, and how to deal with it
I see alot of me in my children, which bring up a wave of emotions that I thought were successfully suppressed. Try to put yourself into their shoes, like the first day of school, moving to a new neighborhood, divorce or marriage, death of family members, and/or financial issues that affect their immediate family. If you look at your daily lives and reflect on what influenced your emotions. Take that feeling an add a lack of understanding and you are only scratching the surface of what our children feel.
I've found that over time, the stress level that I introduce into the house has caused more tension and emotion. After watching the effect that raw emotions had on my children, I decided to review my habits and how I can help them. In order to change, I needed to understand what they were feeling, how to help. I started listening to them, not just hearing, but listening to what they said and how they said it. I noticed that some days were better than others, and on the harder days, I started talking with them. not just speaking at them, but really trying to incorporate their days into our conversations. The more we talked, the more I started to understand what they were going through. This understanding allowed for better dialog and better relationships.
My oldest is now 13, and although I know that some of the more interesting times are yet to come, I hope that the respect brought through understanding will allow each of us to face each obstacle as a true family, With Love and compassion.

Baby Alert is about to be raised to Def Con 2
We're getting ready to do an ultrasound to see if we have one or more babies, as well as to see how healthy it is. We've always been careful during her pregnancies, however, I tend to gain the weight, I get bloated, and my clothes just don't feel right. Hee Hee.
Thank said, the calculator is at the bottom of this blog. I hope you read it and please give me any input or ideas on how to make my wife more comfortable during her pregnancy.

A Day In the Life
What is it about fear that defines who or what we become.
Is it the idea of loosing control, and our desire to hold onto it for as long as possible, or is it the inane desire to progress into a controlled atmosphere?
I truly cannot explain it for myself. For the past two years, I have been at one job or another, and see to find a position that is in the process of being phased out or transitioned completely, which leaves me looking for new prospects. The obviously invoked a since of dread and in some cases, loathing towards my employers. It has put me in a state of welfare, and the need to ask others for help. Which, if you knew me, would know that that very act seems to strip any dignity that I may have preserved. I find myself in a place that is relatively unknown to me, and that scares me to death.
The idea of having to survive, and not knowing how to do that is just tearing me apart. I see what others have, what they are doing, what I can't provide to the ones that I care about, and it has put me in a place of disgust. Disgust at what I've become, disgust from what I was, and disgust at the prospect of not changing in the near future. What is wrong with me?
To answer this question, let's parse out the mental to the physical issues. Physical issues range from multiple surgeries that were an attempt to fix my knee's and stomach, to disorders such as Cushings, GIRD, Crones, Centralized Gout, Compression of my lower back that sends spasms and numbness to my lower extremities, calcium deficiency that is starting to claim my teeth.
With all of that, I'm often asked how I can keep my spirits up. Well, with a 70 times more likely to get stomach and esophageal cancer, multiple joint replacements, etcetera, if I was to continue to think about all of this, it would drive me insane with worry and anger towards the world. Now, with three children and a wonderful wife, it wouldn't be fair to them to put each one through a world of grief and anger that would most likely ruin their lives. My legacy in this world is my family, and if I need to endure a lot of pain to do so, so be it.What are my goals in life?
If anybody tells you that life is simple, they certainly have not attempted to live it to the fullest. Like every challenge, life will continue
to find ways to keep you on your toes. It is how you deal with each curveball that defines who you are going to be. I am not here to tell you that I am a perfect example, just the contrary. I suck at trying to live life, I can safely say that I'm not even close to tackling my challenges. That is the fun of it. That is what keeps me on my toes, makes the desire to continue flow through my veins. I am here today, following my aspirations from the lessons that I learned for myself, from my parents, from historical figures like President Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, President Kennedy, and Martin Luther King. Were these people perfect, NO they weren't, and they accepted this and continued to better themselves, and by direct result, improved the lives of everybody else they touched. With everything I have learned, it's not the amount of pain that defines, you, it's your will to live and survive that defines the character that in the end, defines who you are.Are you Game?

Welcome To Me
Browsing some of the pages on the net, I found a pretty good site that provides users a base of information for star gazing. Go to http://www.accuweather.com/astronomy.asp and enter in your zip or the location of yoru choice. The following pages provide blogs, video, images, hobbiest portal, and comment forums for anybody interested in everything from basic lunar phase to nebulae to equipment. Accuweather.com is a weather site by nature, but they have teamed up with various sites to provide a good portal to check sky clearness and decent information on constellations and other heavenly starward objects.
Take a minute to view this site and browse the information. Report back and let me know if the information was useful, and any other sites to view. I will check this on a daily basis and enter in more information hopefully on a similar schedule.

What's on TV

What is on TV?
It was funny until my 13 year old daughter walked in and expressed an interest in the commercial. From my own point of view, I thought the commercial was funny, however, when my daughter experienced an interest, it made me sick to my stomach. Five years ago, this type of stuff wasn't on until late at night; now with the advent of cable, you see more and more sexual content on commercials, TV shows, and even infomercials. Between Viagra, Penis Enlargement, Ribbed for your pleasure sex content, it's amazing that people are questioning the early maturity of our youth. I remember when TV was considered virgin in respect to todays content, so I can safely say that although more liberal than my wife, I still feel weary about what is coming up next or what commercial is going to be shown.
Let me know if you think I'm too conservative, liberal, or just plain off base.
While you do this, and while you think and ponder the lessons given, Please reflect on your situation, the scenario unfolding daily that has some sort of impact on you. Good Luck!
